How to Care for Your Smartphone

How to Care for Your Smartphone

It’s important to learn how to care for your smartphone. It’s an expensive piece of technology that can be costly to repair!

Follow these best practice tips, and if you slip up – don’t worry. There are a lot of smartphone problems that can be fixed.

Cleaning

Smartphones are filthy. Think about how often you touch yours during the day, the air around you, and dropping it on the ground.

Obviously, you can’t use water and soap to clean electronics – it will short them out and render them useless – even if you have insurance!

Instead, several companies like Windex and 3M offer special electronic cleaning wipes that will disinfect your device without any issues!

Storage

Ladies – dropping your phone straight into a purse with all the other moving parts is a recipe for disaster. If you have a padded pocket (in your purse or pants), it’s a much better option.

Boys – your pockets are filled with keys and other odds and ends – store your phone in it’s own pocket, or invest in a belt clip to make sure your smartphone never gets dinged up by the contents of your pockets!

At night, store your smartphone on your bedside table so you don’t accidentally knock it off your bed when you’re sleeping.

Using a Case

You’re just asking for trouble if you don’t protect your phone immediately after getting it. The most important thing you can do when determining how to care for your smartphone is to put a case on it.

Any case is better than no case, but not all cases are created equal. The gold standard is the LifeProof case, which protects from all elements: water, dirt, snow… and shock.

Otterbox is another solid choice.

Of slightly lower quality, but still a stellar product is Incase or Speck phone cases.

Sometimes it can be fun to customize cases, just know that those tend to be of the lowest quality.

Screen Protector

It’s almost worthless to mention phone cases without bringing up screen protectors. Screen protectors are thin, clear layers that adhere to the top of the smartphone’s screen. They tend to be matte so your fingers don’t move around unnecessarily, and so that light doesn’t reflect off them awkwardly.

They protect the smartphone from scratches if you drop it.

What should you do if you don’t have a screen protector and your screen cracks?

We can fix your screen without having to completely replace your phone!

Charging Best Practices

The more your phone gets charged, the weaker the battery becomes. A best practice for charging your smartphone is to wear out the battery until the phone dies, and then charge it up to 100%.

Rinse and repeat.

Obviously this isn’t always possible, but keep it in mind when you’re trying to figure out how to care for your smartphone the right way!

The port where you plug in the charger is the most vulnerable part of the phone, since you’re constantly plugging and unplugging it.

Sometimes, this port becomes unusable. We can repair it – again, without replacing the whole phone!

The Most Common TV Repairs & Their Causes

most common tv repair

At Target PC Inc, we see our fair share of electronics in need of repair. In addition to smartphones, tablets and laptops, we also specialize in the most common TV repairs.

If you are experiencing an issue with your television, you may – in some cases – be able to correct the problem yourself. In this short post, we will review a few of the most common TV repairs we do, and what you can try on your own before calling us.

If the problem persists, don’t let it concern you. The most common TV repairs are often simple and inexpensive for us to do for you.

Let’s begin by looking at some common display issues.

“There is a vertical or horizontal line in the center of my screen!”

If you experience a line or several lines in the center of your display, the single most common cause is something you can easily fix yourself.

Begin by checking all of your input cables. Display issues such as unwanted lines are often causes by loose inputs. Ensure everything is plugged in tightly.

If the problem persists, cycle through channels and switch to different video inputs. This will help to isolate the problem. If that line only appears on a certain channel or when using a certain device, there is likely nothing wrong with your TV.

Other common causes include dead pixels on your TV display, or loose connections or wiring inside the TV itself. Both of these issues can be repaired.

A common sign of loose wiring is if the line on your display changes when the TV is moved.

“My television isn’t producing any sound!”

Issues with audio are often caused by the problems affecting your display… as described above, begin by checking that all inputs are connected tightly.

Next, cycle through channels and different connected devices to see if the problem can be isolated to a single input. If you find that a single device is not producing sound, such as a DVD player or a video game console, there is likely nothing wrong with the television itself. You may be able to regain audio simply by switching the audio input to the device you are currently using.

If everything is properly connected, and none of your audio channels or inputs are producing any sound, it is time to explore the possibility that something may be damaged inside your TV.

It could, of course, by a wiring issue. But in most cases, especially if the TV has had power problems, it may be the result of damage to the internal speakers.

“My TV refuses to turn on!”

Although this may sound obvious, most power issues relating to televisions are the result of a power outage.

Are other electronic devices working in your home?

Did a circuit breaker snap off?

Did a power bar switch off?

If everything is working as it should, attempt to unplug the television and plug it back in. For best results, plug it directly into the wall rather than a power bar or extension cord.

Did this solve the problem?

Is the power cable securely plugged both into the TV and into the wall?

Also, are you attempting to turn on your TV from the unit itself rather than a remote? Remember that the issue could be with the remote itself, or the remote may simply be in need of new batteries.

If your TV still will not power on, it is possible that you have a loose power connection, or the fuse inside the TV has burned out.

If you live near Cleveland, Ohio, this would be a great time to contact our team of professionals at Target PC Inc. We can quickly diagnose the problem with your TV, and then give you an estimate to repair it back to working order.

Here’s What to Do with an Old Laptop

what to do with an old laptop

The thing about electronics is that they have a finite lifespan. What was once a powerful laptop used for business or gaming is now sitting in a closet and collecting dust.

Perhaps the hardware wore out, or maybe the technology is too outdated for your machine to do anything useful.

Whatever the case, consumers are often left wondering what to do with an old laptop.

In this short guide, we’ll provide you with a few different ideas.

Repair It

This option might seem a little too obvious.

If your laptop has a few broken parts – such as a damaged screen or a loose power connection – it is easy enough to to repair. In most cases, the cost of the repair will be less than buying a new laptop.

If you live in the Cleveland area, take a peek at our services page to see what we can do for you.

Give It One Job

If you’re wondering what to do with an old laptop that’s in otherwise perfect working condition, consider re-purposing it. In other words, give it just one simple task to do.

For instance, you could mount it to the wall and use it as a stationary calendar or photo frame. If you have a few broken keys, a battery that won’t hold a charge, or a damaged CD drive – it really won’t matter.

If you have a room in your house that doesn’t receive WiFi, you could turn your old laptop into a hotspot. Here is a guide on how to do that.

You could also use your laptop simply for its screen by connecting it to your desktop computer.

Use It for Parts

Removing and reusing laptop hardware can be rather tricky. This idea would be best applied by those more technically inclined.

For example, you could remove the hard drive from your old laptop, place it in an enclosure, and then use it as an external drive.

In some cases, you may also be able to salvage the CD drive, although finding an external enclosure for it may prove to be challenging.

Sell It for Cash

Computer repair stores, such as Target PC Inc here in Willoughby, Ohio, will often buy your laptops. We can use the parts, or sometimes even refurbish certain models for resale.

The answer to what to do with an old laptop is not to throw it away. Not only is that the equivalent of tossing money in the trash, but it is also not the environmentally responsible thing to do.

Instead, bring your old laptop into our showroom and we may be able to give you cash for it on the spot.

  • Trying to figure out what to do with an old laptop you no longer use?
  • Are you upgrading to a newer, more powerful laptop?
  • Do you need extra cash to pay for an unexpected expense?
  • Perhaps your laptop requires extensive repairs, and you simply cannot afford it?

Here’s What to Know before Buying a TV

Here's What to Know before Buying a TV

Although we have always repaired televisions at Target PC Inc, we only recently posted the service itself to our website. So it seemed like a good time to talk about what to know before buying a TV.

Sure, if you already have a TV and it needs repairing, call us at (440) 725-0642.

But if you happen to be in the market for a new TV, you should know that they are not all created equal.

What to Know before Buying a TV

For some people, aspects such as resolution and display type don’t matter all that much. It might be as simple for them as going to their local department store and choosing the least expensive TV that will fit in their living room.

But for the rest of us, it’s a good idea to explore a few different options. After all, different TVs exist to suit different tastes and needs.

Display Types

Plasma: Best for cinematic viewing, and ideal when purchasing a relatively large TV. Excellent color quality, high contrast ratio, and a wide viewing angle. Tend to lack brightness.

LCD: Generally the least expensive option. Energy efficient and fair color quality. Not a great choice for gaming. Also suffers from limited viewing angles.

LED: Usually refers to an LCD TV that uses LED lights for backlighting. A little more expensive than an LCD TV, but more energy efficient. Tends to also boast an improved contrast ratio.

OLED: A true LED TV tend to be bright with a high quality image. Ideal for daytime TV watching. Not inexpensive, and some viewing angle problems.

Contrast Ratio

This term refers to the range of colors between the darkest blacks and the brightest whites. The bigger this ratio is, the better. As the term suggests, it is expressed as a ratio, such as 5,000:1.

Manufacturers have been known to overstate this figure. It is a good idea to do a search online to get a true sense of the contrast ratio on any given TV before purchasing it.

Color Reproduction

Sometimes referred to as color depth, this essentially refers to the number of colors the TV is able to create. What to know before buying a TV is that it should have a bit depth of at least 8 bits per channel.

This will guarantee that the TV is able to create enough colors to display photo quality images.

Aspect Ratio

This term refers to the ratio between the TV’s width versus its height. For example, older more box-style TVs tend to have a more ‘square’ shape with a 4:3 viewing ratio. On the other hand, newer TVs are almost exclusively made with a 16:9 viewing ratio.

If, however, you intend to exclusively watch widescreen Hollywood movies, you may wish to consider a ratio of 2.4:1. This ratio will be harder to find and more expensive than 16:9.

Refresh Rate

Finally, let’s take a look at what is known as refresh rate. This value is measured in hertz (Hz), and it refers to the number of times the image is refreshed each second.

In most cases, you will be choosing between 60 Hz or 120 Hz. Although more expensive, a TV with a refresh rate of 120 Hz will display smoother transitions between images and reduce motion blur.

This is especially helpful if you watch a lot of action movies or play a lot of video games. If you intend to primarily watch the evening news, 60 Hz will be more than adequate.

Which Laptop Brand Is Right for You?

That’s a great question, and the answer really depends upon your personal preferences.

For instance, if you do a lot of typing, the design and usability of the keyboard may be very important to you; therefore, you may be inclined to choose a brand that is highly rated for its keyboard and touchpad.

On the other hand, perhaps you use your laptop as a multimedia device while traveling. If that is the case, you might value a brand that is highly rated in the audio and display categories.

What is interesting about this study is that it does not take system performance. reliability, or batter life into account. This is most likely because it varies so greatly between different models of the same brand.

It is also worth noting that between 2011 – 2015, Lenovo was the top rated brand according to Laptop Mag. This year, it dropped to fifth place.

At the same time, Dell finished in the first spot, while just two years ago, it would not have placed in the top five at all.

Similarly, Asus finished in the second spot in 2013 and 2014, but did not place in the top five at all in 2015.

Regardless of the laptop brand you choose, know that the experts at Target PC Repair can upgrade or fix virtually any brand. Check out some of the most common repairs we perform, or contact us to get started.

4 Ways You’ll Accidentally Damage Your Cell Phone

damage your cell phone

Nearly 3 in every 4 Americans own a smartphone. While that may be great news in terms of staying connected, other surveys show that roughly 1 in every 3 smartphone owners will lose or damage their cell phones.

Here are a number of surprising figures in terms of how you may damage your cell phone:

  • The average iPhone is damaged within 10 weeks of purchase
  • 23 million Americans that have damaged their smartphones while watching a sporting event
    • 12 percent flung their phone in a fit of passion
    • 13 percent dropped their phone into their beers
  • Men are more likely than women to damage their smartphones
  • 18-to 24-year-olds are 16 percent more likely to break their smartphones
  • Men are 70 percent more likely to lose their phones
  • Men are 57 percent more likely to drop their phones into a toilet
  • Women are 42 percent more likely to have their phone stolen
  • The most common accidents include cracked screens and spilled fluids

Of course, if it is simply a matter of a cracked screen, we can easily repair that for you.

Barring that, what we are going to explore today is four common ways to accidentally damage your cell phone that you may not even know about.

(1) Accidentally installing malware

When you download smartphone apps, even from iTunes, you are risking granting permissions that may not be safe. In fact, you could accidentally damage your cell phone – or at the very least, your privacy – by allowing a new app to access your contacts, send text messages on your behalf, delete data, activate your camera, use bandwidth, or track your location.

Conclusion: If you aren’t familiar with an app, skip installing it.

(2) Leaving your phone on the charger too long

Do you generally leave your smartphone on the charger all night long? If so, the excess heat is not good and could damage your cell phone. In some rare cases, that excess heat has resulted in fires. Unlike the old days of cell phone usage, you no longer need to wait until your battery has fully died before charging it. At the same time, overcharging does not benefit your device.

Conclusion: Take your smartphone off the charger when it reaches 100%.

(3) Placing it in direct sunlight

This is the type of damage to your cell phone that could easily be an accident. Whether it is leaving your phone near a window, or placing it on a picnic table while playing some beach volleyball, that excess heat can easily cause several hardware components to malfunction.

Conclusion: Keep your phone in cool and shaded areas.

(4) Accidental exposure to moisture

This point might seem obvious; we all know that water and electronics don’t mix. That being said, many smartphone users forget that moisture does not necessarily refer to gigantic puddles. For example, you can damage your cell phone by placing it in the cup holder in your car that had a cold beverage in it a few moments before. Even placing your smartphone in the pocket of some freshly dried pants could be dangerous.

Conclusion: Keep your device away from any source of moisture.

Have you accidentally wrecked your smartphone in an unusual way? Tell us all about in the comments below.

7 New Features in Windows 10

7 New Features in Windows 10

As most of us already know, Windows 10 will officially be available on July 29, 2015. There are a variety of new features in Windows 10, many of which will come as a pleasant surprise for those running Windows 7 and 8.1.

In fact, if you are running either of these versions of Windows, you can move ahead now with reserving your copy of Windows 10.

Let’s take a look at seven new features in Windows 10 that are sure to be big hits.

(1) Return of the Start Menu

Windows 10 features the return of the Start Menu. The decision to remove it in Windows 8 impressed no one.

Best of all, it can be customized to remove the tiles and apps that were first introduced in Windows 8. In other words, you can set it to have the look and feel of the traditional Start Menu you’ve come to know and love.

(2) No more full-screen apps

Perhaps one of the best new features in Windows 10 is the elimination of full-screen apps – referred to as Windows 8 “Metro” apps. Those apps still exist in Windows 10, but they launch as a desktop window rather than something intended for a touchscreen experience.

(3) Improvements to the Action Center

The Action Center in Windows 10 takes on the familiar look and feel of an inbox. Notifications are all grouped in one place, and as they are resolved, they become archived.

(4) Cortana makes the jump to PC

Cortana was first introduced as your Microsoft digital assistant on Windows Phone 8.1, but she is one of the best new features in Windows 10! She has access to your hard drive, calendar, email, OneDrive, Bing, and more.

With simple voice commands, Cortana can be asked to perform basic functions for you, much like Siri on the iPhone. As luck would have it, Cortana also got a lot wittier between her first introduction and now.

(5) The introduction of Microsoft Edge

Microsoft laid Internet Explorer to rest for the greater good of us all. But one of the new features in Windows 10 is the introduction of Edge, a totally new and redesigned web browser.

It was designed for speed, and for functionality. For instance, Cortana can provide you with directions and reviews as you browse a restaurant website. You can also make notes and drawings on particular websites before sharing them with others.

(6) Improved apps for email and calendar functionality

Windows 10 boasts some significant improvements to email and calendar apps. They are much faster than Windows 8, totally responsive, and feature a variety of swipe gestures.

(7) Create multiple virtual desktops

If you do not have multiple monitors to work on, Windows 10 offers a solution with virtual desktops. You can easily create multiple desktop views, and then easily switch between them using shortcut keys.

Which new features in Windows 10 are you most excited for?

We at Target PC would love to hear your thoughts. Please leave a comment below.

9 Tips to Extend Laptop Battery Life

9 Tips to Extend Laptop Battery Life

Recently we published a post on buying a laptop or desktop computer. The primary reason you would consider buying a laptop is for its portability.

Sure, a laptop could be plugged in all the time… but if that were the case, you really would get more value from buying a desktop computer.

Of course, the downside to portability is that laptops run on a battery with a limited amount of power.

If you are looking to extend laptop battery life, here are nine tips that ought to do the trick.

1. Enable Power Saving Mode

Most laptops are designed with some sort of power saving function. By enabling it, your system will instantaneously trade off some its power in exchange for preserving the life of your battery.

2. Disable Unused Features

You can extend battery life by disabling features you are not currently using. A few examples include:

  • Devices connected by USB
  • External hard drives
  • WiFi and Bluetooth

Any time a hardware component is in use, it kills your battery faster.

3. Decrease Brightness & Volume

Extend laptop battery life by diminishing the brightness of your screen. Most laptops are designed with hot keys to do this. After all, the display on your laptop drains the battery rather quickly at full brightness.

You may also wish to consider muting the volume. Playing sounds through your laptop speakers will also cause your battery life to drain faster.

4. Close Programs

If you are not currently using a program, close it. Be sure to fully shut it down through the Task Manager.

Take a peek at the programs loaded in your System Tray, as well. Those minimized programs may be draining a lot of system resources on the back end. As a result, your laptop battery dies faster.

5. Do One Thing at a Time

Sure, you might like having a dozen browser tabs open, working in Excel, streaming live music, all while uploading a new video to YouTube… but the reality is that multitasking drains your battery exponentially faster than doing one activity at a time.

If you really want to extend your laptop battery life, only use it to complete the most important task you need done now.

6. Clean Your Battery

If you have a laptop with a removable battery, odds are that dust and debris collect in its enclosure. Every so often, take the battery out to wipe it down with a dry cloth. It is a good idea to clean the contacts while you are at it.

7. Store Your Laptop in a Cool Environment

Heat can permanently weaken the charge your battery is able to hold. Clean the laptop fan regularly so that it can keep your machine cool, and be sure to store your laptop somewhere away from excessive heat.

8. Let Your Battery Die

Every so often, let your laptop battery completely die, and then give it a full charge with the power left off. This has been shown to extend laptop battery life.

9. Contact a Professional

After following the strategies list here, do you still find that your laptop battery dies faster than it should?

Are you considering purchasing a second battery for emergencies?

Would you be open to upgrading some of your hardware components to improve the overall efficiency – and battery life – of your laptop?

If so, contact our team at Target PC Repair. We have years of experience solving laptop battery issues in the Cleveland area.

Choosing Between a Laptop or Desktop Computer

Choosing Between a Laptop or Desktop Computer

If you’re in the market for a new computer, you may be trying to choose between buying a laptop or desktop.

Before you decide to purchase either, have a look at this list of factors to consider.

Portability

If you need a computer that can easily be transported from one location to the next, there is no contest between a laptop or desktop; you obviously need a laptop.

This is especially true when you consider weight.

Cost

For the same money you would spend on a laptop, you could get much a more powerful desktop computer.

Or, if you are working within the constraints of a limited budget, you could get a functional desktop for far less money than a laptop.

Connectivity

When it comes to connectivity, choosing a laptop or desktop is close to a draw.

Sure, a desktop is virtually always in a location that gets internet access. But thanks to wireless cards, you can get internet connectivity from a number of different locations.

Space

A desktop computer will take up more space than a laptop. If you do not have a desk, or a proper place to set up a desktop computer, you would be best to choose a laptop.

Ports & Drives

Few laptops are made with CD-ROM drives anymore, although this may not be an issue for you. A laptop is also likely to have less ports. If functionality and flexibility is an issue, a desktop computer is best for you.

Screen Size

What will you be using your new computer for?

If it is simply intended for word processing and web browsing, a laptop may do the trick. A 15″ or 17″ screen would be adequate. In fact, you could even choose a smaller netbook option and still perform those operations.

If, however, you intend to work with larger video files, do any kind of design work, or play games, it is easier to connect one, two, or even three different high resolution monitors to a desktop.

Granted, you could connect a monitor to a laptop, but that would eliminate the key benefit of portability.

Comfort

If ergonomics are a factor, it will be much more comfortable to work on a desktop than a laptop.

You can easily position its keyboard, monitor, and mouse to be more comfortable.

Laptops, on the other hand, vary significantly in terms of their keyboard layouts and trackpads.

Furthermore, it can be difficult to set up your laptop in such a position that you can comfortably view the monitor while typing… unless, of course, you intend to use it at a desk.

Accidents

Since laptops tend to be transported more often than desktops, they are more prone drops, spills, and other accidents. If you are the clumsy type, it might be best to stick with a desktop computer.

Upgrades

When choosing between a laptop or desktop, give some thought to long-term use. It is much easier to upgrade hardware components in a desktop than a laptop.

The same goes for repairing or replacing particular parts.

Theft

A laptop is much more likely to get stolen than a desktop computer.

Laptop or Desktop – Which One Wins?

When it comes to space and portability, laptops definitely win. If you are working within a very small space, or you often need to take your computer with you, choose a laptop.

In virtually every other scenario, desktop computers are the better choice.

Just don’t forget to have any upgrades or maintenance performed by Target PC Repair!
